Life Legacy
Maurice Delmas Fischer, 87, of Sedalia, died Saturday, December 10, 2011, at Sylvia G. Thompson Residence Center.
He was born July 12, 1924, in Moniteau County, a son of the late John and Mary (Verlinden) Fischer. On December 26, 1946, in Tipton, he was married to Theresa Elizabeth Schmitt, his wife of 64 years, who preceded him in death on July 15, 2011.
Maurice was raised and educated in Tipton. He was a 1942 graduate of Tipton High School. After high school graduation, he worked at Wisdom’s Drug Store. He served in the US Navy during World War II. After serving his country, he worked as a meat cutter at the Gerbes stores in Tipton and Boonville. He later moved his young family to Sedalia to work as a heavy equipment operator for Fischer & Fischer Excavating Contractors.
He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He was a member of Council 831 of the Knights of Columbus and a member of the Fr. Tony Kraff Assembly 576 of the Fourth Degree Knights of Columbus. He served on the Sacred Heart School Board, Parish Council and was an usher for many years.
Maurice was well-known throughout the Pettis County area. He never knew a stranger and was always ready to help his fellow man. Maurice loved spending time with family and friends.
Maurice is survived by four children, Marilyn (Jack) Arnold, Judith (Steve) Jackson, and Jim Fischer, all of Sedalia, and Michelle (Randy) Eiken, of Jefferson City, a daughter-in-law, Patricia Fischer, of Jefferson City; sisters-in-law, Margaret Karigan Fischer, of Sedalia and Sister Corita Schmitt, of Campbellsport, WI; ten grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. In addition to his wife and parents, he is preceded in death by a brother, John Q. Fischer; a son, Michael Fischer, and a daughter, Jacqueline Waggoner.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 am, Wednesday, December 14, 2011, at Sacred Heart Church with Fr. Mark Miller officiating. Pallbearers will be Jack Arnold, Steve Jackson, Randy Eiken, Matt Fischer, Joe Fischer and Tom Fischer. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery. Full military honors will be conducted at graveside by VFW Post 2591.
The prayers of the Rosary will begin at 6 pm, Tuesday, at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel, followed by the Two Bell Ceremony conducted by The Fleet Reserve Association, Branch 32 with visitation to follow until 8 pm.
Memorial contributions are suggested to Sacred Heart Church or Sacred Heart School Foundation in care of McLaughlin Funeral Chapel.
