Sophia R. Johnson, 1924-2005, Sedalia


Sophia R. Johnson, 81, of Sedalia, died Monday, April 18, 2005, at Fair View Nursing Home.

She was born Feb. 9, 1924, in Warrensburg, a daughter of H.H. and Ida Mae Wolfe Russell. On April 7, 1946, in Warrensburg, she was married to Robert S. Johnson, who survives.

Mrs. Johnson was raised and educated in Warrensburg. She was a 1942 graduate of Warrensburg High School. She attended Lindenwood College in St. Charles and the University of Missouri-Columbia. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority. She was a state officer for the Daughters of the American Revolution. She was past president of Sorosis and a past member of P.E.O. She was a member of the Pettis County Democratic Club. She has been on the Sedalia library board and served as president several times. She was a member of the Missouri State Historical Society.

She and her husband owned Russell Bros. Clothing Store in Sedalia for several years. She was an avid china painter. She loved to cook and was known for her special cookies that she shared with her children and their friends throughout their school years. She liked to go to public sales and auctions. She loved her German short hair dogs and her Siamese cats.

Surviving are a son, Russ Johnson, and his wife, Kathy, of Sedalia; a daughter, Judy Woolery, and her husband, William, of Sedalia; and five grandchildren, Andrew Johnson, Sam Woolery, Megan Johnson, Dan Woolery and William Woolery.

She was predeceased by a son, Jeff Hagan Johnson in 1953.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Friday at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel, with memorial services to follow. Her body was donated to the University of Missouri School of Medicine.

The family suggests memorial contributions to the National Alzheimer's Association, Heard Memorial Club House or the Sedalia Public Library.
