Life Legacy

The Rev. Rolland R. Nothwehr, 78, of Sedalia, died Monday, Jan. 20, 2003, at Fair View Nursing Home.

He was born Oct. 2, 1924, in Yorktown, Iowa, a son of Dick and Laura Wehmiller Nothwehr. On June 6, 1948, in Yorktown, he was married to Ervene Muller, who survives of the home.

The Rev. Nothwehr was baptized as an infant and confirmed at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Yorktown. He was raised and educated in Iowa. He farmed until he was 35, when he was led to prepare for the pastoral ministry. He spent one year of preseminary training at Concordia Teachers College in Seward, Neb. He graduated from the Concordia Seminary in Springfield, Ill., in May 1964. He served the following congregations: Our Savior Lutheran, Crestview, Fla.; Zion Lutheran, Lincoln; and St. Paul's Lutheran, Omaha, Neb. He retired from Our Savior Lutheran in Sedalia in 1989. He remained active serving vacancies in six congregations in the area for about a year each. During his 25 years in the ministry, he served in several local offices and positions. He was a circuit counselor, a district leader in the Forward In Remembrance Celebration, District LLL pastoral advisor and was a conventions banquet speaker. He was invited to be the banquet speaker at the International Lutheran Layman's League convention in Milwaukee.

Throughout his ministry, he wrote several unpublished Lenten and Advent series that made use of various visual settings and dialog styles. He was the author of the series ''By My Hand... For My Sake,'' published by Creative Communications for the Parish of St. Louis. He has a creative worship Lenten series, ''Then I Met Jesus,'' submitted for publication in 2004 by Concordia Publishing House.

Also surviving are two sons, Danny Nothwehr of Sedalia and Randy Nothwehr of Cedar Rapids, Iowa; a daughter, Renee Curtis of La Monte; five grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Lester Nothwehr.

Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Savior Lutheran Church with the Rev. Ronald E. Hoehne officiating. Pallbearers will be Kenneth Lumpe, Earl Meyer, Arthur Reuper, Robert Dittmer, Kenneth Kammeyer and Donald Jungmeyer. Burial will be in Highland Sacred Gardens. Friends may call after 9 a.m. Friday at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Friday.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Our Savior Lutheran Church or to Bothwell Hospice.
