Life Legacy


Leola ''Peggy'' E. Swopes, 82, of Hughesville, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 2004, at Bothwell Regional Health Center.

She was born Aug. 10, 1921, in Sedalia, a daughter of Alvin Clinton and Josephine Elizabeth Swopes Henderson. On April 4, 1942, in Sedalia, she was married to Gearry M. Swopes who died Aug. 26, 1999.

Mrs. Swopes attended Bothwell School and was a member of Mount Herman Baptist Church. She was a cook at Bothwell School and worked at Town & Country Shoe Co. for 17 years. She was a member of the Jolly Elders and Bothwell Neighbors Club. She enjoyed sewing and traveling.

Surviving are a daughter, Connie J. Abney, of Sedalia; two sons, Gearry W. Swopes, of Sedalia, and Terry L. Swopes, of Hughesville; a sister, Mary Crouch of Sedalia; six grandchildren and 10 great-granchildren.

She was also predeceased by four sisters, Alberta Gill, Ruth Wise, Virginia Gunder and Margaret Richards; and a brother, Alvin Henderson.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel, with the Rev. Kendall Simpson officiating. Pallbearers will be Steve Loftis, Travis Swopes, Jeff Richwine, Rick Miller, Jason Black and Mike Chancellor. Honorary pallbearers will be Allen and Margie Spratley, Eddie and Marla Wise and Marvin and Patty Shull. Burial will be in Mount Herman Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral chapel.

The family suggests memorial contributions to Mt. Herman Church.
