Ruth Gwendolyn Elmore, 83, of Chillicothe, formerly of Sedalia, died Thursday, September 18, 2008 at Henrick Medical Center in Chillicothe.

She was born May 12, 1925 in Simmons, MO, the daughter of R. Dewey and Gladys E. (Womack) Suggs. On August 28, 1943, in Houston, MO, she was married to the Rev.  Milton I. Elmore, who preceded her in death on June 24, 1981.

Ruth was appointed to the Executive Board of the Missouri Baptist Convention, and also served as secretary of the Missouri Baptist Convention. She was the state president of Women’s Missionary Union (WMU), and did mission work in Haiti.

At age 48, she fulfilled a life-long dream and entered the nursing program at State Fair Community College and graduated as an RN. She was later honored by SFCC with the Distinguished Alumni Award.

From 1972-1980 she supported her husband’s ministry at East Sedalia Baptist Church by being involved in all aspects of congregational life. She especially played a key role in Sunday School teaching and in the music ministry of the church.

After the death of her husband, she joined First Baptist Church and became active in the life of the church.

Surviving are a son, N. Keith Elmore, of Liberty; four daughters, Kathy Sue Hovis, of DeSoto, Beth Ann Lewis, of Pensacola, FL, Patty Lou Rodewald, of Bates City, and Rebecca Jean Prater, of Overland Park, KS; 11 grandchildren; and two great grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, September 20, 2008, at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Dr. Drew Hill officiating. Pallbearers will be her grandsons. Burial will be at Crown Hill Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the chapel.

The family suggests memorial contributions to First Baptist Church in care of McLaughlin Funeral Chapel.
